It’s nearly the end of the year 2017 and guess what, Mahindra & Mahindra decided to roll out its updated version of flagship vehicle, The Scorpio. Now Mahindra Scorpio had tough times & had to struggle really hard to keep up in its long dominated SUV market in India due to the introduction of new Sub 4 metre compact SUV’s like the Vitara Brezza that earned the IOCTY badge and became instant success for Maruti. Also The Hyundai Creta became immensely popular & is selling in good number. This had a lot of impact on the early days SUV’s makers like Mahindra & Tata & led to a sharp decline in sales.
2017 Mahindra Scorpio Facelift Exteriors
The Outgoing generation of Scorpio was launched three years back with its mature bossy design language giving a slightly upmarket look. The face lifted Mahindra Scorpio has the basic boxy structure as the existing model. But on observing it keenly we found out that it only had minor cosmetic updates on the exteriors with minimalistic modifications.
The major change is the new seven-slat front grille and a revised boot door with the absence of plastic body cladding and the chrome fog lamp housing. It has also got a new set of alloy wheels, turn indicator on ORVMs, Rain Sensing wipers & bit of tweaks are added to the front and rear bumpers.
New Scorpio Engine, Performance & Drivability
However, the biggest change that Scorpio has undergone is under the bonnet as it houses the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine from its sibling XUV500. It now produce 20 more horsepower with 140hp & 330 Nm of peak torque.
It’s got new transmission options as the six-speed manual unit. Now the car feels more fun to drive with the new engine as you never feel out of power. There is a bit of body roll at higher speeds considering the fact it is a tall SUV, But it feels planted and manoeuvres around smoothly most of the times.
Price Bracket of the 2017 Mahindra Scorpio in India
Now the new Mahindra Scorpio is priced between Rs. 9.93 lakh for the base model and goes upto to Rs. 16.11 lakh for Top Spec. model.
|New 2017 Scorpio Model||Expected Ex-showroom Price Bracket|
|Base Model 2523 cc Diesel||Rs. 9.93 Lakh|
|Top model 2179cc Diesel||Rs. 16.11 Lakh|
2017 Mahindra Scorpio Facelift Interiors
Mahindra has made few changes to the interiors with the revised dashboard with an upgraded infotainment system allowing Android Auto connectivity, Connected Apps, Eco Sense and Emergency Call. But the infotainment system is placed far beneath the road viewing angles of driver and causes a distraction from the road while driving.
The new seat padding is added to seats to provide more comfort but the convenience features like door pockets and bottle holders are still of no use because it is hard to assess them while the doors are closed and do not have much space.
The SUV comes equipped with Driver side and co-Driver side Airbags and ABS but misses our on EBD and Traction control for a car this size. It has also got anti pinch windows, Voice command Assist & Tyre pressure indicator.
Now the new Scorpio is more or less just an update on customer demands as Mahindra is trying to gain back the lost market share. The updated Scorpio gets same apps introduced on the XUV500 with Connected Apps, Eco sense & Emergency Call function with Android Auto same as that in KUV100. But it hasn’t really worked because most of the shortcomings the Scorpio had still persist and there is a slight bump in the price range too. But let’s hope that the largest SUV maker make its way back into the market. However, there are rumours that soon Mahindra will be launching a new version of XUV500 & Scorpio in the Indian market, that might be a turning point for Mahindra in SUV segment, but for now the new 2017 Scorpio is not a big game changer.
