The hyundai verna launched over a decade ago in India has gone through a lot of cosmetic changes over the year keeping the hood remain the same . The korean manufacturer this time comes with a all new design to target the mid sedan segment this year. The 2017 Hyundai verna based on the fluidic design taken from the elder sibling elantra definitely looks fresh with updated engineering under the hood.
The new 2017 Verna is the latest firecracker from the korean car maker. The fifth generation Verna which is the fourth in India arrives well in time to catch the festive season in India. The makers did well thought of the launch tempting customers to strive for it this season. Packed with features replicated from the Elantra includes a panaromic sunroof which adds to the class of the vehicle. The first in class Ventilated Seats make it even more tempting as it is not offered by any of its competition including the honda city or even the maruti suzuki ciaz.
The 2017 Verna comes with both Petrol and Diesel variant both offering a 6- speed Manual and automatic transmission. Keeping behind the 1.4 litre Engines the car makers thought to keep only the 1.6 litre engines in both diesel and petrol is a nice move by the manufacturer targeting the sport lovers in india. Obviously both the engines have been almost redone completely to suit the indian roads offering both refined and seamless design for the indian market.
2017 VERNA DESIGN & EXTERIORS
Talking about the design being inspired by the fluidic design of Hyundai continuing the legacy to design marvellous beauty on the street starting from the 1st Gen Fluidic Verna till the Elantra the same continues with the Verna this time around.
The 2017 hyundai Verna is based on the fluidic sculpture 2.0 With massive looking hexagonal grill upfront giving the car the muscled up look with large intakes for the engine to cool down, also offering Projector fog lamps with the beautiful Day light Running lamps. Moving to the sides hyundai mentions about the american coupe design with the sloping rooftop that extends to the tail lights.
The eye strucking design of the new generation diamond cut alloys with those big 16″ Alloys make the car look much taller than what it is which are only available in the top two trims SX and SX (O). The car also gets all the bells and whistles including the chrome door handles and ORVM turn indicators which adds to the party. Moving all the way to the tail which reminds me of its sibling The Elantra but with a much affordable pricing.
2017 HYUNDAI VERNA INTERIORS
Hyundai has always been practical in designing the interiors of every car they have produced which shows that a lot of R&D goes by between the launch of the next generation vehicles. This time around the hyundai verna also gets the same treatment. The dashboard gets a dual tone paint scheme offering both posh look and the sporty feel to visually appeal the market.
The dashboard which is tilted towards the driver side houses the intuitive 7″ Touchscreen which supports both apple car play and android auto. Now which means one can easily mirror his or her own apps on the screen for the ease of use. Inclusion of the automatic climate control and parking cameras make life easier to park or stay cooled in those hot sunny days with the Sunroof over your head. Yes you heard me right. A sunroof which is electrically assisted now enters the Hyundai verna giving the market to choose between the range of models offered.
The three spoke leather wrapped steering reminds me of its elder sibling Elantra with white and blue backlight Multi Information Display offering the range and average speed in front of the driver. Talking about the seats the new baby gets first in the segment ventilated seats which are inly available for the front passengers is a boon in these summers which will surely lure in more demand of the vehicle.
Talking about the rear seat comfort though the legroom is increased by 40MM from the previous gen Verna it still is miles behind the class of the Honda City and the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz. However the lack of space is over looked by the beautifully crafted rear seats giving the user ample under thigh support for the long journeys. Keeping you cool is your very own personal AC vent. The throw of which is decent enough to provide you the comfort you desire.
If we get to the boot now which is a boost of 40 Litres from the previous version, the boot is well designed in shape and size with a little loading sill. The boot now offers the first of its segment smart trunk feature which enables you to unlock the trunk by standing near to the sensor with your smart key in the pocket for 3 seconds allowing the trunk to open up. Well, a nifty feature to add though as now you dont have to manually open the trunk.

2017 VERNA ENGINE PERFORMANCE, RIDE & HANDLING
The all new Verna is definitely a vast improvement in terms of drivability, handling dynamics and sheer luxury from the predecessor. Hyundai this time has completely got rid of the 1.4 Litre diesel engine and stood up with the 1.6 litre petrol and diesel. Both equipped with the 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions offering both power and efficiency at the same time. We drove the 1.6 Litre Petrol SX(O) variant which comes with an automatic gearbox. Here is our short test drive review.
While the engine most likely which remains the same in terms of cubic capacity it has been completely redone for the 5th Gen Verna. The 1.6 Litre petrol churns out a maximum power of 121 BHP at 6400RPM and 151 NM of torque at 4850 RPM. Which is very well mated to the 6-Speed auto gearbox. Power churns out really well within city traffic and on the highway it feels stable as well. Only downside of the Automatic Gearbox was the way the gear ratios are tuned. The gear change can be felt largely when you put your feet on the accelerator pedal. Though the sound can be neglected but this will surely eat up more fuel in terms of mileage is concerned.
That said the Hyundai verna for the petrol Automatic Variant churns out a fuel economy of around 17KMPL which in real life and city traffic would be somewhere around 14 KMPL, wherein the petrol manual delivers a relatively higher economy of 17.4 KMPL. The diesel on the other hand has a fuel economy of 24.75 for the manual variant and around 21 for the automatic. All figures might look lessor in terms of the competition Ciaz but you do have to loose a little to get something extra. (and that is the Sheer Power)
Another major improvement was in terms of the Cabin Noise peeping inside. The cabin is now very well insulated with minimum noise entering the cabin. The suspension set up is slightly on the stiffer side resulting in better stability in corners. The steering wheel borrowed from the Elantra feels lot fresher this time and delivers the bite and feedbsck you would need from a mid size sedan. Major stepdown was the braking department. Though the car is quipped with ABS and EBD as standard the car lacks the bite from the breaks. One would have to press it hard to find himself at a comfortable position to be stopped. Though hyundai says they have worked on the breaks but the automatic that we drove felt a bit laggy in terms of the breaking department.
Features have always been the department where hyundai never compromised.
Be it bringing the rear ac vents in the picture or now the ventilated seats, features has always been a part of the triumph over its rivals. The 2017 Verna is feature loaded starting from the headlights and all the way to its back. If you ask me the best feature was the Ventilated front seats. Nothing can ever beat the cooled seats in a hot sunny day. Ventilated seats are segment first to hyundai Verna which is not available to any of its rivals in the category. Another stand out feature has to be the new 7 “ touchscreen which supports Android Auto, Apple Car Play and Mirror link along with Voice commands.
It surely is a class apart from its rivals in this department. Another segment first feature is the Hyundai’s Eco coating technology which prevents foul smell to be developed inside the cabin from the AC vents. A smart feature which will surely bring in class leading safety in terms of health.
Hyundai motors bringing the Electric Sunroof for the first time makes the car stand out from the rivals like Ciaz and matches the platforms with the Honda City. We got to check out the same and it turned out to be pretty handy.
Hyundai in india is banking on the safety features to a great extent. The 2017 Verna is no different which now comes with ABS and EBD , DUAL AIRBAGS and ISO-FIX SEATS for the child safety as standard across all the variants. Hyundai has also given an option for the buyers to go for 6 Airbags in the optional variants. Other safety features include Auto Headlamps with cornering lights which gives a better view at the dark. With cruise control as an option now it becomes easier for the buyers to cruise with an ease on the highway the same gets activated after 60KMPH.
The new Hyundai Verna stands strong against its rivals in the mid size sedan categories. The good ride and handling, bucket loaded features and Amazing performance makes the car stand out of its rivals. The only spot it lacks is the rear legroom which can be felt the moment you step in the car. Overall its a value for money package with all the bells and whistles and had also been priced aggressively. Talking about the pricing the New Verna is priced right between the city and the Ciaz. Where the top end variant is placed 1 Lakh Rupees more than the Ciaz and is 1 lakh Rupees cheaper than the City. While the Ciaz does not equip itself with the features like the Verna does and the City does not come with a diesel Automatic variant.
So folks !! If you are looking for a city car with Huge list of features and a powerful engine which is both economical and fun to drive then the wait is over. Hyundai Verna is your choice. But if you prefer chauffeur driven and can compromise on the Sunroof but would need good amount of Rear Legroom then folks The Maruti Suzuki Ciaz is the option.
